Reading Writing and Grammar

(Tested Material: 30 Bands )

1 Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow.         [10]

This is the era of science. There is hardly any domain where science and technology do not play a significant role. Whether it is on the defense, in the matter of clothing or comfort, food, dwelling, trade and commerce, education, and health, modern science and technology have tremendously contributed to making man’s life increasingly comfortable. Science has lately entered the domain of art, music, and the film industry. It functions on general truths or the operation of general laws of nature especially as obtained and tested through scientific methods. On the other hand, culture is the gradual development of the intellectual and moral faculties under the rigorous processing and practicing of education. Excellence and enlightenment are then the easy achievements of aesthetic training

In this age of ICT, rockets,s and space research, science has made a remarkable contribution to the development of culture in every society and civilization. Although men of letters, who are generally taken to be the custodians of culture, tend to look with certain apprehension at the impact of science on cultural values. Modern thinking on the subject differs from this outlook and regards their fears as unfounded. At times science and culture appear as closely conflicting disciplines but inversely science does not spell the ruin of culture instead it acts to polish and promote our culture to modern requirements.
