   ENGLISH

Attempt all questions:
1.    Read the poem and answer the following questions under it:               [5]
I remember I remember
I remember, I remember
The house where I was born,
The little window where the sun
Came peeping in at morn;
He never came a wink too soon
Nor brought too long a day;
But now, I often wish the night
Had borne my breath away.
I remember, I remember
The roses, red and white,
The violets, and the lily-cups
Those flowers made of light!
The lilacs where the robin built,
And where my brother set
The laburnum on his birthday,
The tree is living yet!
I remember, I remember
Where I used to swing,
And thought the air must rush as fresh
To swallows on the wing;
My spirit flew in feathers then
That is so heavy now,
And summer pools could hardly cool
The fever on my brow.
I remember, I remember
The fir trees dark and high;
I used to think their slender tops
Were close against the sky:
It was childish ignorance,
But now 'tis little joy
To know I'm farther off from Heaven
Than when I was a boy.

Jitiya Festival
Jitiya is an important festival of Neplai married women of Mithilanchal and Tharu women of all cast. This festival is named after Masabashi’s son Jimutabahana, a blessing son of the sun. Masabashi was an unmarried princess who spent her life as hermit living in a heritage. Jitiya falls in the month of Aswin (September-October). It is celebrated for three days on Saptami (Seventh day) Astami (the eighth day) Nawami (Ninth day). The fasting day, Astami is called Jitiya. The married women take brata (fast) for the good fortune of their children, husband and family. In this festival, brothers invite their married sisters to their homes and the married women to their maiti (maternal home).
On the first day of Jitiya women take a bath in a river or pond early in the morning and formally start their Brata. Before taking a bath they put Khari (oil-seed-cake), special soil, on a leaf of sponge gourd and worship Jimutabahana, and let it flow on the river. They take the remaining oil back home and massage their children with it. This Khari is effused for legendary figures Chilo (eagle) and Sherom(fox) wishing them to take Brata (fasting) of Jitiya. The married women remember their female ancestors too. On the day, women scrub their house with cow’s dung to make their house sacred. At midnight, they prepare othaghanordatkhat (special food), and eat it before the cockcrow. They also eat fist and millet bread. They have curd, beaten rice, and fruits as dar. Before eating datkhat, they offer some food to the legendary figures Chilo and Shero.

The changing ocean
Scientists have long stated that the main effect of global warming is the melting of the polar ice caps, resulting in a rise in sea levels. However, as we observe the theory become a reality, it is becoming apparent that this phenomenon also has multifarious secondary effects.
Freshwater from melting ice caps flows into the sea reducing the concentration of salt in the water and thus the density of the sea. Saline-dense water would normally sink to the sea and then travel to warmer equatorial regions. Concurrently, the warmer, less density saline water in warmer parts of the world would travel along the sea surface to the pole, where its salinity would increase and the water would consequently sink. However, as the salinity of polar water decreases, this ocean process slows down. This cycle is vital. however, as it has an oxygenating effect on the water and also carries nutrients from deeper water to the surface. Therefore, any slowing down of the cycle may have dramatic consequences for sea life.

A second alarming discovery is that the sea itself has traditionally played a role in reducing global warming. Oceans hold within them a certain amount of carbon dioxide. As the temperature of the sea rises, so its capacity to hold co2 falls, thus the problem of global warming is further exacerbated. However, there is a piece of good news to counter this: melting ice caps and lower saline levels enable the sea to hold more carbon dioxide, so the problem could be offset to some extent.
