Did I Miss Anything?
Nothing. When we realized you weren’t here
we sat with our hands folded on our desks
in silence, for the full two hours.

Everything. I gave an exam worth
40 per cent of the grade for this term
and assigned some reading due today
on which I’m about to hand out a quiz worth 50 per cent.

Nothing. None of the content of this course has value or meaning
Take as many days off as you like:
any activities we undertake as a class
I assure you will not matter either to you or me
and are without purpose.

Everything. A few minutes after we began last time
a shaft of light suddenly descended and an angel
or other heavenly being appeared
and revealed to us what each woman or man must do
to attain divine wisdom in this life and the hereafter

This is the last time the class will meet
before we disperse to bring the good news to all people on earth.

Nothing. When you are not present
how could something significant occur?

Everything. Contained in this classroom
is a microcosm of human experience
assembled for you to query and examine and ponder
This is not the only place such an opportunity has been gathered.

but it was one place
And you weren’t here.

Climate change is going to make inequality
even worse than it already is

December 8, 2015
By Chelsea Harvey

In a paper published on Monday in
Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences, scientists demonstrate
the full ramifications of a widely
accepted theory about climate
change: that it will almost certainly
have a disproportionate impact on
the poor. Acknowledging this fact
in models they find can drastically
change estimates of how climate
change will affect the economy, and
leads to a deeply troubling conclusion
- climate change won’t just hit the
poor hardest, but it will exacerbate
existing inequality within societies.
The disproportionate effect of climate
change on the poor isn’t a new idea.
But in general, while the economic
models used to inform climate
policies have accounted for income
inequalities between different
countries or regions of the world,
they’ve failed to acknowledge that
these inequalities exist within
countries as well.
“The lacking description of
Sub regional/national inequality is one
of the most glaring lacunae in these
models,” said lead author Francis
Dennig, an assistant professor of
economics at Yale-NUS College in
Singapore, in an email to The Post.
Dennig and his colleagues decided
to see what would happen if they
tweaked a leading climate economy
model, known as RICE (the Regional
Integrated model of Climate and the
Economy), to account for
inequalities within different regions
of the world essentially
acknowledging that different
countries contain people of both
higher and lower incomes. They
found that when they assumed a
scenario in which lower income
sectors of society were hit hardest by
the effects of climate change, a key
factor in our understanding of the
economic effects of climate change
changed drastically in comparison to
models that didn’t take these
inequalities into account.

Each baby has an individual schedule of development; general patterns of growth have been observed. Three periods of development have been identified, including early infancy, which extends from the first to the sixth month; middle infancy, from the sixth to the ninth month; and late infancy, from the ninth to the fifteenth month. Whereas the new born is concerned with his or her inner world and responds primarily to hunger and pain, in early infancy the baby is already aware of the surrounding worlds. During the second month, many infants are awake more and can raise their heads to look at things. They also begin to smile at people. By four months, the baby is searching for things but not yet grasping them with its hands. It is also beginning to be wary of strangers and may scream when a visiting relative tries to pick it up. By five months, the baby is grabbing objects and putting them into its mouth. Some babies are trying to feed themselves with their hands.
In middle infancy, the baby concentrates on practising a great many speech sounds. It loves to imitate actions and examine interesting objects. At about seven months, it begins to crawl, a skill that it masters at the end of middle infancy.
In late infancy, the baby takes an interest in games, songs, and even books. Progress toward walking moves through standing, balancing, bouncing in place and walking with others. As soon as the baby walks well alone, it has passed from infancy into the active toddler stage.
